“One in, one out” for the Hoops

By Deal Town

It’s been a case of “one in, one out” in terms of Hoops player movement at the start of the new year.

The club have signed defender/midfielder Steve Baines from Canterbury City while Charlie Dickens has joined Ashford United.

Hoops manager Derek Hares said: “We put in a seven-day approach for Steve after he said he wanted to sign for us. He is a good utility player who should fit in well. As for Charlie, Ashford are his hometown club and he’s left us on amicable terms.”

Baines made his Hoops debut in Tuesday’s 5-3 friendly defeat at Ashford.  The fixture on Ashford’s 3G surface provided a valuable run-out for the two clubs after their scheduled matches last weekend were both postponed because of waterlogged pitches. Deal’s goals came from Charlie Walsh (2) and Michael Yianni while Kristin Gregory made his first-team comeback after being sidelined for three months by a knee injury.

This Saturday the Hoops are due to entertain Erith Town at the Charles Ground but Hares admitted:  “To be honest I can’t see the game going ahead if we have much more rain.”

Deal Reserves are away to Sheppey United Reserves in the NRG Gym Kent County League Division 2 East on Saturday.
