LEAGUE WEEKEND ROUND-UP

The first Premier Division match of the new season took place on Friday night when Corinthian defeated Tunbridge Wells 2-1 at the Culverden Stadium.

After a goalless first half Tom Bryant put Wells in front after 72 minutes but eight minutes later Josh James equalised from the penalty spot and then Oscar Housego snatched the visitors’ winner four minutes from time.

Moving on to Saturday’s action and Lordswood were the second biggest winners of the day behind Cray Valley, defeating Erith Town 4-1 at home. Jordan Gallagher and Daniel Smith gave the Lords a 2-0 half-time lead. Lee Friend pulled a goal back for the Dockers early in the second half but Junior Alade then made it 3-1 before Gallagher scored his second in added time.

Relegated Whitstable Town marked their return to the SCEL with a 3-0 home win over AFC Croydon Athletic. After a goalless first half Darren Marsden put the Oystermen ahead just after the hour mark and then further goals followed from Harris Rodgers and Aaron Quain.

Ashford United, who are again likely to be serious title challengers this season, opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory at Beckenham Town. Both their goals came in the second half through Shaun Welford and Rory Hill.

Newly-promoted Sheppey United went down 2-0 at Sevenoaks Town, whose goals came from Byron Walker and Yacine Gnahore.

James McDonald, the league’s leading scorer last season, was on target again for Hollands & Blair as they defeated Erith & Belvedere 2-1 at home. Sam Prescott scored Blair’s other goal with Ike Anderson replying for the Deres.

Bearsted began their Step Five career with a 1-1 home draw with Croydon. After a goalless first half James Fray put Croydon ahead but Bradley Webb’s strike 13 minutes from time earned the Bears a point.
