The club have been saddened to learn that one of our former
players, Kevin Fairclough, has passed away.
“Fairy”, which was one of Kevin’s handful of nicknames, made a total of nearly
300 appearances at right back for the Hoops in various spells between 1984 and
1997 as well as playing at different times for other local sides such as
Betteshanger CW and North Deal Utd.
Kevin looked back at his Hoops career in one of our match day programmes some
years ago and his comments included the
following: “Over the years I played with some good players, the likes of Tommy
Cureton, Jimmy Law, Jeff Almond, Les Winham and ‘Doc’ Brady to name but a few.
“I think the best all-round team that I
played in was the Town side that finished runners-up to Hythe in the Kent
League in 1989, and the most enjoyable moment was beating Folkestone in a
penalty shoot-out in the Kent Senior Trophy final at Crabble in 1995. It was a
great day and night!”.
After his playing career was cut short by
injury Kevin was still a regular visitor to the Charles Ground and often helped
out behind the bar, and everyone at the club would like to pass on our sincere
condolences to Kevin’s family and friends.
