HOOPS V PUNJAB UNITED PREVIEW

By Deal Town

The Hoops will entertain Punjab United at the Charles Ground for the first time ever on Tuesday night (7.45pm) when the sides meet in a League Challenge Cup second round tie.
The Gravesend club were formed in 2003 and, although their name may suggest otherwise, the club state in their constitution that they are “…open to anyone regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation or ability.”
United joined the Kent County League Premier Division for the 2016-17 season and ended up winning both the league title and the Kent Intermediate Challenge Cup. That earned them promotion to the SCEL First Division last season, and once again they won the title to clinch promotion to the Premier Division.
But they have found life in the top division pretty tough going so far and are currently lying in 17th place in the table. United are without a win in their last six matches in all competitions and that includes their goalless home draw with the Hoops last month.
Punjab didn’t have a game on Saturday while the Hoops will want to put their 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Tunbridge Wells behind them as quickly as possible. The winners of Tuesday’s tie will be at home to Corinthian in the third round.
