By Deal Town

The Hoops host title-chasing Ashford United on Saturday with manager Derek Hares saying they are determined to avoid a repeat of what happened when the two sides met in the reverse fixture at Homelands in early October.

Deal lost that game 4-0, with Ashford scoring all their goals in the opening 21 minutes, and Hares recalled: “The game was already over by then and we don’t want that to happen again on Saturday.”

Three of Ashford’s goals that night were scored by Shaun Welford and the former Dover Athletic striker showed he is still bang on form in front of goal with another hat-trick in United’s 4-1 League Challenge Cup win over Canterbury City on Tuesday, which took his tally for the season in all competitions to 23.

The point the Hoops gained from last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Lordswood lifted them to 15th in the table but they know it’s going to be tough to take anything off an Ashford side who have won eight of their last nine matches. Lee Scott is ruled out of the game by an ankle injury while Charlie Walsh is unavailable.

Deal Reserves are without a fixture this Saturday.

  1. Providing the weather holds and the pitch is OK, looking forward to this game. Let’s hope for another good turnout to get behind the team and for the team to show the spirit they have done in the last two games.
    Will be tough!
