When Deal play Binfield at home in the fourth round of the FA
Vase on Saturday it will be only the third time in the Hoops’ history that the
club have been involved in this stage of the competition.
The first occasion was in 2000, the year that Deal went on to actually win the
trophy in that never-to-be-forgotten May day at Wembley.
But four months earlier manager Tommy Sampson and his men had made the
much-longer journey to County Durham to meet
Crook Town in the fourth round, where they recorded a 3-0 victory thanks to
goals by Steve Marshall (two) and Roly Graham, who also of course scored the
superb late winning goal in the final against Chippenham Town.
Nine of the side who started the tie against
Crook also played at Wembley, Marshall, Graham, Jamie Kempster, Steve Best,
Marc Seager, Terry Martin, David Monteith, Paul Ribbens and Phil Turner, who
came on as a second-half substitute against Chippenham.
